About the course

About Code of Conduct

The NMC Code sets out the professional standards of practice and behaviour that nurses, midwives and nursing associates must uphold. It is also the benchmark against which concerns are judged, so understanding it properly is one of the most useful things you can do if you are facing Fitness to Practise, preparing for revalidation, or simply want to strengthen your practice.

This course works through the Code in four modules, one for each of its themes. Each module explains what the standards mean in everyday practice, how they relate to professional reflection, and how they are used in the Fitness to Practise process, followed by a quiz to check your understanding. A recap and a final assessment bring it all together.

By the end you will be able to identify which parts of the Code are engaged by a concern, reflect against them honestly, and show how you now meet them.

Concerns about nurses and midwives are assessed against the Code, and case examiners and panels look for evidence that you understand which standards were engaged and how you now meet them. Being able to talk about the Code specifically, rather than in general terms, is part of showing insight.

Use this course while you prepare your response to the NMC and alongside Reflection Writing for the Fitness to Practise Process. The Code reflection workbook included with the course gives you structured prompts for each theme.

Code of Conduct: frequently asked questions

Prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety, and promote professionalism and trust. Each theme contains a set of standards describing what nurses, midwives and nursing associates must do. The course has one module for each theme.
The Code is the standard against which your practice and behaviour are judged. Concerns are usually framed around it, so showing that you understand which standards were involved, why they matter and how you now meet them is an important part of demonstrating insight.
Be specific. Link particular standards to concrete changes in how you work, and support them with evidence such as reflective pieces, supervision or appraisal feedback, relevant training and testimonials from people who have seen your current practice. The workbook included with this course helps you structure this.
Yes. The NMC Code applies to nurses, midwives and nursing associates alike, so the course is relevant to everyone on the NMC register.
Yes, in part. The Code asks you to uphold the reputation of your profession at all times, so conduct outside work, including on social media, can be relevant if it affects public trust in the profession.
You can record it as CPD if it is relevant to your practice. NMC revalidation requires 35 hours of CPD over three years, including 20 hours of participatory learning; self-paced online study is usually recorded as non-participatory. You decide what to include.
No. The course is education about the Code and professional standards. If you are facing an NMC investigation, speak to your union, indemnity provider or a regulatory solicitor about your case.
