NMC Fitness to Practise: frequently asked questions

Fit 2 Practise is a UK education and mentoring service for nurses, midwives and nursing associates going through the NMC Fitness to Practise process. We offer short online CPD courses, reflective statement templates and checklists, confidential 1:1 mentoring and a CV writing service, created by people with lived experience of the process. We are independent of the NMC and do not give legal advice.

Yes. You can get support at every stage of a Fitness to Practise case, and getting it early usually helps. You can use a union such as the RCN, Unison or RCM, a solicitor, the NMC's independent Careline, peer support such as NMCWatch, and education and mentoring like ours. Asking for help is not an admission of anything. What support you're allowed.

There is no fixed timescale. Some cases close at screening; cases that go on to case examiners or a hearing can take much longer, sometimes well over a year. Our guide how long does an NMC investigation take? looks at each stage and how to use the time well.

In most cases, yes. A referral alone does not stop you practising. Restrictions only apply if an interim order is made: an interim suspension order stops you practising, and an interim conditions of practice order sets conditions you must follow. It is not a requirement, and it depends on your case. Many registrants get advice and representation through their union (such as the RCN, RCM or Unison) or indemnity provider, and some instruct a regulatory solicitor.
